The film

Documentary · Germany 2025 · 69 min · German with English subtitles

Christl Eibl, born in 1940 in Chodský Újezd (Heiligenkreuz) in what is now the Czech Republic, tells of loss – a traumatic experience, especially for a six-year-old child: the loss of familiar surroundings, of home. In “30 Kilo Heimat”, she tells her grandson, the director, about her fate as a displaced person from the Sudetenland.

Christl not only talks about the expulsion itself, but above all about the traces that the loss of her homeland left on her. She talks about reconciliation, but also about letting go and remembering.

Christl Eibl, protagonist of the documentary 30 Kilo Heimat

Christl Eibl

Contemporary witness

Christl was six years old when her family had to leave the Sudetenland. She gives a moving account of her sad memories, but also of the happy ones. There are tears, but there is also laughter – and, in the end, reconciliation.

She lives with her husband in a small village east of Munich, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Michael Eibl

Director & producer (born 2006)

I had the idea for this film at the age of twelve. Since then, the film, my relationship with my grandmother and I have grown together.

I want to show that our grandparents here in Germany experienced flight and expulsion, too – and hope this helps people empathise with the refugees and displaced persons of our time.
